McLain Ward made a painful announcement on his Facebook page this morning: the great mare Sapphire has died. McLain writes:
“With a very heavy heart I have to share that Sara has passed away this morning due to complications from colic. Our entire Castle Hill family and every person she has touched has lost a great friend. Thank you Sara not just for all the dreams you made come true but simply for being who you were. You always will be my champion in every way. God speed good friend.”
Sapphire, a Belgian Warmblood, competed at the top of the showjumping world with McLain. Amid countless victories Sapphire won the 2009 Spruce Meadows and the 2010 Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. She and McLain helped the USA team win Olympic team gold medals in 2004 and 2008. She was regarded as one of the top showjumpers in the United States when she was retired in 2012.
